American India Foundation

The American India Foundation (AIF), in partnership with Society for Education, Action and Research in Community Health (SEARCH), Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) and local Indian State Governments, commits to reduce neonatal and maternal mortality and improve the health of pregnant women in India. Through this public-private partnership model, AIF and its partners will train and build the capacity of community health workers, promote positive health behaviors, increase the identification and referral of high risk maternal cases, and improve access to—and utilization of—public and private healthcare services. In the rural and impoverished areas of Indian states Jharkhand and Odisha, AIF aims to reduce the neonatal mortality rate from 40% to 25%, save around 104K newborns, benefit 160,000 pregnant women and train 2,400 community health workers.

Each of our partners brings unique value to this commitment: a globally-recognized and proven, research-driven model of home-based newborn care (SEARCH); funding and community engagement (TSRDS); and long-term sustainability (local governments and community leaders).

The total cost of the five-year project (2017-2022) is $3.25 million. We have secured $2 million and are in the process of securing the remaining $1.25 million to complete the financial requirements of the project.
